( KNZA  )-Authorities are investigating the discovery of  counterfeit one-hundred dollar bills at four area businesses this week.

The first case was reported Tuesday at the Horton National Bank.

Horton Police Chief Beau Hasenhor says the bank received the bill in a deposit from a local business, which is now cooperating with police in an attempt to identify which customer the bill may have originated with.

Then on Thursday two additional cases of counterfeit bills were reported.

Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore says his department took a report of a counterfeit $100 bill being passed at the All Star Convenience Store in the 12-hundred block of First Street Wednesday night.

Defore says there were able to obtain video from the store of the transaction...

Defore says the same individual was spotted on similar recordings at two businesses in Falls City where fake $100 bills were passed and matches the description of the suspect in the Horton case.

Falls City Police report bills were passed Wednesday night at Sapp Brothers and Casey’s General Store.

Defore says in all four cases the counterfeit $100 bills were originally a 5-dollar bill that had been bleached out and then reprinted.

He urges area businesses to take an extra look at the large bills they receive...

Defore says the U.S. Treasury Department has been notified of the counterfeit money.

Businesses that believe they may have received any of these bills or someone trying to pass one should contact their local police department.
