USD 430 Drops Backpack Buddies
08/07/2012

(KNZA)-- It might just fit the definition of a catch 22:  poor economic conditions means low income children have less food to eat, while those same economic conditions mean a local program, used to provide that needed food to the children, can't achieve the funds necessary to keep it operating.

That's the situation in the South Brown County Schools of USD 430, where the “Backpack Buddies Program,” provided by the Second Harvest Food Bank, comes to an end(Play Audio)

That's Doctor Steve Davies, Superintendent of Schools for USD 430.

He says discussion will continue with the Saint Joseph, Missouri based Second Harvest on possible alternatives for providing students with food for weekends away from school(Play Audio)

The program, as explained by Second Harvest Executive Director David Davenport, provides at-risk students with the nutritional needs they might otherwise go without(Play Audio)

Although the South Brown County Schools reluctantly surrender their involvement with the program, Hiawatha's USD 415 plans to continue participation, and is in the process of raising “Backpack Buddies” funds for the fast approaching new school year.

Taking part for the past two years, USD 415 also saw the Second Harvest funding dropped after the first year of the partnership.

The district, at last check, was still in need of over 4-thousand dollars to continue the partnership, with help from the community needed.

Anyone wanting to make a donation can do so by mailing payments to the school district office, located at 706 South First Street in Hiawatha.
