(KNZA)--Lengthy discussion, regarding how to proceed with cleaning up the Horton property where a house exploded earlier this month, dominated the early portion of Monday evening's Horton City Commission meeeting.
The July 6th blast, at 1588 2nd Avenue West, left 58-year-old resident Ronnie Tulk dead and the house a pile of rubble.
Relatives of Tulk, including his son, Casey, were in attendance during the meeting, and explained moves they've already made, including inquiries into the price of clean-up, as well as other options(Play Audio)
Trading the deed to the city remains as one possibility, as does deeding the property to an interested neighbor. However, how much a neighbor would be willing to pay for removal of the rubble, as well as the dying or dead trees that stand there, remains unknown. Also immediately unavailable has been the legal ownership of the property, as well as taxes owed on the location.
The city wants to provide whatever assistance it can, but, in the words of Mayor Tim Lentz, possible damage to city owned equipment remains a very high possibility.
In the end, with no definite decision reached, family will continue discussion with local scrappers, and remain in contact with Mayor Lentz, in order for a final decision to be reached.
Along with other business of the evening, Commissioners also revisited, if only briefly, the possibility of allowing golf carts, or other such small vehicles, to be driven on city streets.
City Clerk Candy Schmidt provided the Commission with ordinances used by other cities that allow residents to do so, including Hiawatha.
Appearing to want to proceed with allowing it to happen, the Commission turned the matter over to City Attorney Kevin Hill, on vacation when they first discussed the issue. He will now review the proposal, and the wording of the ordinances, and provide his input on the matter in the near future.
