( KLZA) - Black Hills Energy is warning customers of a nationwide scam that wrongly claims President Barack Obama is providing credits or applying payments to utility bills.
Scammers have phoned customers or contacted them in person, posted fliers and used social media and text messages to perpetuate the scam.
Customers are being told they can make a utility payment using a bank routing number supplied by the criminal and a bank account number consisting of numbers from the customer’s Social Security card. Black Hills Energy and other utilities cannot process any attempt to pay using the invalid numbers and no credit will be applied to the customer’s account.
Customers should end any suspicious conversation with someone claiming to represent Black Hills Energy and call the company’s 24/7 customer service line at 888-890-5554 for assistance. Customer service associates can confirm whether the call was from Black Hills and verify a bill payment or whether service work is scheduled at a home or business.
Black Hills Energy, serves 196,000 natural gas customers in 106 eastern Nebraska communities.
