Hay Shortage in Missouri
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says there is virtually no hay available in Missouri. The head of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, Brent Hayden, says the situation this year is aggravated by last year’s events. (play audio :20)
Hayden says producers are scrambling to find hay and are paying high prices for it. (play audio :09)
Haden says the release of Conservation Reserve Program land would help – a little. Applications are being prepared or made to get the USDA to release those acres.
Meanwhile, the widespread hay shortages mean more and more farmers will be sending their herds to market. (play audio :09)
Hayden says the conditions could drive the nation’s cattle herd to its lowest level in 60 years.
