The Brown County Commission has begun the 2013 budget process.
Commissioners went over 15 budget requests Monday with department heads and organizations receiving funding from the county.
The majority were for funding increases, with the largest being a more than $128,000 increase requested by Sheriff John Merchant for the sheriff’s dispatch. Merchant also requested a more than $100,000 increase for the sheriff’s office and more than $68,000 increase for the jail.
Among others requesting funding increases were the Brown County Extension Service, which is seeking a more than $38,000 increase for 2013 in order to hire a second extension agent.
The extension service has been without a family and consumer science agent since Jennifer Ploeger resigned last November to take another job.
Ploeger also served as the county emergency management director, a position that since has been filled.
Extension board member Jeff Grimm said the board feels there is a need for a second agent, especially with the county’s high poverty rate.
Current Extension Agent Matt Young serves as an agricultural agent.
The commission will hear the remainder of the 2013 budget requests next week.
