For the second year in a row, an impasse has been declared in contract negotiations between the Hiawatha Board of Education and Hiawatha Teachers Association.
Superintendent John Severin said impasse papers were signed and sent to the Office of Labor Relations this week after the two sides could not reach an agreement on two items in a contract for the 2012-2013 school year...( play audio )
Severin says the Office of Labor Relations will now assign a federal mediator to met with representative of the two groups. The mediator is free of cost to the district.
If negotiations still can’t be settled, then a fact-finder is brought in—this time at a cost—to work with both the board and the Teacher’s Association.
Severin said until negotiations can be settled, teachers will continue to work under the 2011-2012 contract.
Last year’s contract impasse was resolved during the mediation process.
