Atchison and Holton Split Double-Header
It was a split in Holton last night between the Atchison and Holton legion ball clubs, as Atchison notched a 14-5 win in game one and game two went Holton's way 9-8 in walkoff fashion.
Game one featured a lot of offense at the hands of Atchison as they scored 14-runs and won the game by nine runs, 14-5. Atchison lead it early 3-1, then stretched that lead out in the fourth inning with a five-run inning. Austin Gibson and Jimmy Priest lead the offensive attack for Atchison with three-hits each in game one, while Hunter Olberding only allowed Holton to have six team hits and earned the pitching win. Cooper Zeller was the tough luck pitcher for Holton in the game.
Second game of the double-header was a totally different game with the teams trading leads and going to extra innings when Holton would get back-to-back double's from Drew Porter and Jay Morris to win the game 9-8.
Atchison took an early lead 3-0 in the first inning but Holton would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run home run by Jacob Pool, to tie the game. Then in the second Holton's offense would continue to score plating four-runs to take a 7-3 lead. Atchison would mount the comeback not being discouraged by giving up the four-run inning, as they plated three in the third and two more in the fourth to regain the lead 8-7. But once again Atchison wouldn't have the lead for long, as Holton behind a pair of double's scored one in the bottom of the fourth to tie it up at 8-8. After a scoreless fifth they went to extra innings and in the bottom of the sixth it would be a pair of doubles again that sparked Holton to score and ultimately win.
Offense was plentiful in the game by both teams, but the guy that stood out the most was Holton's, Pool who finished the night 3-3 with two runs scored, five RBI and earned himself McDonald's "Player of the Game." Pool's teammates, Jay Morris and Drew Porter each finished the night contributing, as well. Morris had two double's an RBI and run scored; while Porter had a pair of runs scored.
For Atchison it was the top of the order doing the scoring for them with Eric Belleville and Dustin Gosa each scoring three runs, Thad Hawk scoring two runs and tallying three RBI's, while Hunter Olberding had two hits and two RBI's.
Five pitchers were used between the two teams, as Holton starter Brandon Schuman went four innings but got a no decision, as Jay Morris finished the game off giving up only one-hit in two innings to earn the win for Holton. For Atchison, Austin Gibson pitched the final 2 1/13 innings giving up four hits and two runs and getting tabbed with the loss. Eric Cummings and TJ Kocour also pitched for Atchison.
With the split Atchison now is 7-8 on the season (5-4 league) and Holton is 5-13 (3-4 league). Atchison will be in action next at Seneca in a double-header on Sunday at 4:00 and 6:00pm. For Holton their next game will be tomorrow night at Hiawatha at 8:00pm.
