It's a step back in time of sorts this Saturday, as the Grassland Heritage Foundation hosts the annual Prairie Appreciation Day at Rachel Snyder Prairie.
Located near Mayetta, the site is a 140 acre native and restored tallgrass prairie owned by the Grassland Heritage Foundation, and is one of the largest remaining tallgrass prairies in north east Kansas.
Angie Babbit is President of the Grassland Heritage Foundation.
She says Saturday's on-site family friendly activities will allow visitors to see how the local landscape may have appeared hundreds of years ago(Play Audio)
Norman is the Snyder Prairie Land Manager. He will be joined Saturday by nature photographer Jerry Sipe, of Lawrence, who will lead a photography walk.
A prairie scavenger hunt will be held for visiting children, while opportunities to help with restoration work will also be included.
The appreciation day Saturday will run from 9 in the morning until 3:00 that afternoon.
Lunch will be served, and guests are asked to dress appropriately for field work, and to bring a water bottle.
Reservations are requested by email at grasslandheritage@gmail.com.
To get to the prairie, abut 17 miles north of Topeka, take US-75 highway to 158th Street south of Mayetta. Turn east on 158th Street and go about three miles to U Road. Turn right on U Road and go a half-mile to the gate. Parking is available along the road.
