Missouri River Governors met in Bismark, North Dakota Wednesday morning, focused on future management of the Missouri River.

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback was expected to attend; however, citing a busy schedule, he was not there personally, but did join the discussion for a brief period by conference call.
Tracy Streeter, Director of the Kansas Water Office and Chair of the Missouri River Advisory Committee, was in attendance.
McMahon, on behalf of the Corps of Engineers, told the Governor’s that state’s can help improve flood forecasting by providing information on spring snow and water runoff.
Additionally, he provided an update of the ongoing work following last year’s devastation, saying the corps should have repairs to river dams and levees completed by the end of the year. However, additional work may be necessary.
The session, the third of it’s type held since last year’s flooding, included the Governors calling for the establishment an early warning system to notify states of flood threats based on mountain snowpack levels, water storage conditions and other factors. They say better real-time data with additional gauges along the river system would enable communities to respond faster and more appropriately to changing conditions.
