TV Inspection of Sewer Lines Set In Hiawatha

The Hiawatha City Commission has approved moving forward with a closed circuit TV inspection of nearly 23,000-square-feet of sewer line in the city in an effort to assess the condition of the lines.
On the recommendation of Galen Lay with TREKK Design Group, the commission Monday evening approved having Ace Pipe Cleaning of Kansas City, Missouri do the TV inspection. The total cost will be $1.90 a foot with an assessment conducted by TREKK.
Lay said the lines to be inspected are located in problem areas.
Hiawatha is under an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to reduce rain and ground water from entering the city’s sanitary sewer system.
Last April, the city began any inspection of homes and businesses in the city looking for illegal connections to the city’s sewer system.
Public Works Director Dave Grimm said they are 77 percent complete with those inspections.
Lay said those inspections have had an impact on reducing the amount of water entering the sewer system. ...( play audio )
TREKK Design was to begin an inspection of the 546 sewer manholes in the city Tuesday.
Lay reported to commissioners the cost of the sewer improvement project is running well below what had been projected.
The city was has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce and nearly one million dollar loan from USDA Rural Development to help fund the project.
