Tuesday marked the annual observance of Peace Officers' Memorial Day. American and state flags were flown at half-staff in honor of the more than 19,000 law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Locally, a brief ceremony was held at the Catholic Cemetery east of Falls City to honor the memory of the late State Trooper Robert J. Chab, who lost his life in the line of duty on January 6, 1984.
The ceremony included remarks from Father David Oldham and Nebraska State Trooper Jerry Chab - the son of Robert Chab. Jerry Chab placed a wreath and members of the Chab family placed flowers on the grave during the ceremony.
Officers from the Nebraska State Patrol, Richardson County Sheriff's Department, and Falls City Police Department attended the ceremony.
In Nebraska, 134 law enforcement officers have been killed while on duty. They include federal, state, county, municipal, and tribal agency officers, as well as railroad, game and parks, and correctional officers.
