Squaw Creek Birding Festival on Saturday
04/27/2012

Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge lies between two major migration flyways.  Spring brings upwards of over 300 species of colorful birds migrating from Central and South America and the Gulf of Mexico.  Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge is having a birding festival on Saturday, April 28, 2012 to celebrate International Migratory Bird Day.
Mark Robbins, an Ornithologist from the University of Kansas will lead two extensive birding tours – Warblers in the Forest at 7:00 AM and Shorebirds in the Wetland at 1:00 PM.
Other activities will including bird banding by the Missouri River Bird Observatory from 9AM to 2PM and a birding hayride for children, complete with craft activities and a view of our Bald Eagle nests from 2PM to 6PM.  We’ll have something for everyone no matter their age!  All tours will leave from Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge’s Headquarters.
Everyone who attends will receive a ticket for the chance to win gifts and prizes.  International Migratory Bird Day was created to encourage everyone to take action and help conserve birds and their habitats. Saturday come out and take advantage of our staff and volunteers who will be on hand to enhance your birding experience and answer any questions you may have.
Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge is located five miles south of Mound City and 30 miles north of St. Joseph, Missouri. Visitors can reach the refuge by traveling north from St. Joseph taking Interstate-29 (I-29) to exit 79, then 2-1/2 miles south on highway 159 to the refuge headquarters and Auto Tour Loop.
