Kansas Senator Jerry Moran says the U.S. Senate has passed overhaul legislation to allow the U.S. Postal Service to dodge bankruptcy and keep post offices open.
The bill passed Wednesday on a 62-37 vote.
Under the measure, the postal service would get an $11 billion infusion. The measure would also halt the closing of more than 100 mail processing centers, bar any shutdowns before the November elections and protect rural post offices for one year.
The bill now goes to the House.
As part of a plan to bring the Postal Service to more solid financial footing, the Postmaster General last year announced that the Postal Service was considering the closure of more than 36-hundred post offices nationwide—including 134 in Kansas.
