Storms that swept through southeast Nebraska Saturday evening left a swath of damage in their wake. The storms brought high winds, heavy rain and hail, and one tornado, which touched down in Johnson County.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department reported the tornado touched down just before 5:15 Saturday evening. Johnson County Emergency Management Director Clint Strayhorn says the twister was located near the Johnson-Otoe County line. (play audio :27 “…north of Cook.”)
Strayhorn had a preliminary damage assessment Saturday night. (play audio :17 “…nobody injured.”)
The home that was destroyed was located on the west side of Highway 50, near the junction of Highway 50 and 738 Road. Nemaha County Emergency Manager Renee Critser (cryt-sur) says the tornado crossed into her county, but she had not heard of any damage.
Other storm damage in Johnson County was reported in Sterling, where high winds took out several trees and tree limbs throughout the town, and destroyed the press box at the football field.
In Nemaha County, strong winds destroyed an irrigation pivot and machine shed, and twisted trees, about two miles southwest of Talmage.
Damage was also reported in the Nebraska City area, where six homes were damaged about five miles northwest of town. Between 50 and 100 trees in an orchard near Nebraska City were laid flat by high winds.
