The Johnson-Brock Board of Education continued discussion Monday night on a proposal to install artificial turf on the football field.
Superintendent Jeff Koehler says the board has been discussing replacing the current grass field with artificial turf for the past couple of months. He says the district is working with Jim Gerking of Entire Recycling to possibly install a surface made of recycled tires. Koehler says the current field surface is unsafe. (play audio :50)
Koehler estimates the cost of the artificial turf would be approximately $254,000. Of that cost, $63,000 would be covered by a state grant for using recycled tires. The school district will match the grant, and individuals have volunteered to do the dirt work and help install the turf, saving a total of $75,000. That leaves the district having to raise approximately 25-to-30 thousand dollars to cover the cost of the turf. Koehler says the school board is expected to vote on the proposal at its May meeting.
In other business, Koehler says two companies submitted performance contracts as the school board considers replacing the air conditioning units in the 1957 building. (play audio :41)
Koehler says the board will take action on the matter next month.
Also Monday, the Johnson-Brock school board accepted the resignations of 5th grade teacher Karen Johns and 4th grade teacher Cindy Kreifels, and approved contracts with Tara Gossman to teach 5th grade and Nicole Lade to teach 4th grade next school year.
Koehler says the district’s NSAA three-year enrollment count for the next year is at 66 students, which puts Johnson-Brock in the upper tier of Class D1 schools. He says the board also discussed purchasing a handicap accessible vehicle for a kindergarten student who will be enrolled in the district next year.
