Continuing enhancements to the Horton Police Department moved forward this week, as a change was made in an attempt to address a long running issue: overtime hours worked by officers on the job.
Horton City Commissioners, following discussion first with Police Chief Beau Hasenohr and then City Attorney Kevin Hill, who clarified matters of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, assessed their next move.
Ultimately, Police Commissioner Jeremy Forkenbrock says it was decided to change the length of the average work week for the department(Play Audio :12 seconds)
The issue of overtime hours has been a long running concern for the Commission, beginning prior to Hasenohr's hiring, going back to former Police Chief Dick Luzier.
Commissioners have voiced confidence in Hasenohr's oversight, saying that while they are aware the budget he inherited is problematic, they are certain he can work through the shortcomings to keep the department on track.
Additionally, as Commissioners focus on the police budget, Hasenohr plans to help reduce spending by placing more responsibilities on part time officers, as their schedules allow.
The matter of overtime hours is only the most recent change made for the department.
It follows the recent change made regarding uniform policy, in an attempt to make officers appear less battle ready during daytime hours, as well as the hiring of three new officers.
