Highland Baseball Splits with Indy

The Scottie baseball team continued league play as they traveled to Independence on Saturdayand Sunday for a four game series.

In game one, HCC rallied from an 11-6 deficit to take a 12-11 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning only to see the Pirates score two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 13-12 walk-off win. Jeremy Monty (Colorado Springs, CO) and Tyler Goldsberry (Papillion, NE) had three hits each to lead HCC hitters. Alex Head (Topeka) added two hits and three RBIs.

Game two saw Independence score seven runs on nine hits in the first inning and the Scotties were held hitless as the Pirates defeated HCC 14-0 in a five inning game. Independence also scored seven runs on eight hits in the fourth inning.

In the first game on Sunday, the Scotties continued to have trouble getting Independence hitters out as the Pirates jumped to a 10-2 lead after four innings. But the Scotties scored four runs in the sixth inning on a two run double by Jordan Oddo (Grain Valley, MO) and a two run single by Jeremy Monty (Colorado Springs, CO), to narrow the gap to 10-6, and then exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning. Monty and Goldsberry had two run singles in the big inning while Oddo and Andrew Standish (Omaha, NE) had RBI hits as the Scotties defeated Indy 13-10. Freshman Josh Glenn (Overland Park) picked up the win, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Glenn allowed just one hit while striking four Pirate hitters. Six Scottie hitters had two hits in the game.

In game two, Brady Greear (Centralia, IL) pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on four hits as the Scotties completed the sweep with an 11-1 five inning win. HCC scored five runs in the third inning on RBI hits by Monty and Goldsberry and a two run home run by Alex Head (Topeka), then added two runs in fourth inning as Oddo and Craig Hill (Morris, OK) had RBI hits. The Scotties then put the game away, scoring four runs in the fifth inning as Vance Gorman (Osawatomie) and Hill had RBI hits. Hill, Oddo, and Goldsberry had two hits each for HCC.

The Scotties are now 16-16 overall, and 7-13 in league play. HCC will host Maple Woods in a non-league double header Tuesday before continuing league play with Labette Community College Friday and Saturday in Highland.
