After initially signing a one-year deal with the Royals for this, Kansas City Royals outfielder, Alex Gordon and the Royals agreed to a four-year contract, thus trumping the previous one-year deal. Both sides stated after Gordon signed the initial one-year deal that they would like to work out a long term deal together.
Gordon receives a four-year deal worth $37.5 million, with a player option in 2016 that would be worth $12.5 million for that season. He is scheduled to make $6 million this season, $9 million in 2013, $10 million in 2014 and $12.5 million in 2015.
The Outfielder is coming off of one of his best seasons since coming up out of the minors for the Royals in 2007. Gordon, who is 28-years-old, hit .303 with 23 homers and 87 RBI's in 2011, with a major-league leading 20 outfield assists earning him Gold Glove. All this after what some people would say as a somewhat disappointing career, maybe not living up to expectations.
Gordon becomes yet another young piece that the Royals continue to build around for their promising future. The four-year contract is the third long-term contract given out by the Royals this spring, as they previously signed shortstop, Alcides Escobar to a four-year deal and catcher, Salvador Perez a five-year deal.
