It's not exactly a scam, but it is questionable: sales opportunities targeting local communities, often claiming to be partnering with the local Chamber of Commerce despite any such actual agreement. The products come in a variety of styles: magnets bearing local phone numbers, koozies, calendars, and, in the instance of what's being reported by the Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, a telephone book cover(Play Audio :14 seconds)
That's Chamber Executive Director Jamie Claycamp who says the company at issue also appears to questionably be using a recognizable company name, changed ever so slightly, as part of the sales pitch(Play Audio :24 seconds)
Apparently, based on word received by the Holton/Jackson County Chamber from select local businesses, the sales rep, during his pitch, implies that the Chamber is endorsing his product.
Claycamp says there's no truth to that claim, and anyone with questions about this, or other similar occurrences, should contact the Chamber(Play Audio :34 seconds)
Such questionable sales attempts come in cycles, sometimes falsely implying the endorsement of Chambers of Commerce, while at other times doing the same with the name of local school districts or even local governments.
As with any unsolicited sales attempt, no personal information should be provided, and no money paid, until it can be confirmed that the company is legitimate.
