An active day at Horton High School Thursday despite students being on spring break, with passersby noticing a strong law enforcement presence at the school.
There was no actual emergency. Instead, the student time-off was utilized as an opportunity to hold an active shooter training session.
A small group of high school seniors served as actors during the scenario set: what if a school shooter was actually inside the facility?
Apparently wanting to maintain secrecy in how such operations are handled, this news department, following an invitation to view the scenario, was told, in no uncertain terms, that video recording would not be allowed, although still photos would be.
Officers were observed making their way through classrooms, walking closely together in pairs, clearing the rooms of any potential danger(Play Audio :01 second)
Overseeing the scenario were two members of the Topeka Police Department, including Sergeant Troy Willard(Play Audio :20 seconds)
The law enforcement members involved in the drill were armed, albeit with simulated ammunition, and equipped in emergency response safety gear(Play Audio :37 seconds)
Taking part in the training were members of area law enforcement agencies, including representation for Brown County based authorities, including the Horton Police Department, the Nemaha County Sheriff's Department, the Kickapoo and Iowa Tribal Police, and the Wathena Police Department.
The training began around 8:00 in the morning, and is expected to last all day.
