Hiawatha’s Oregon Street will be resurfaced this summer.
The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening accepted the low bid from Hamm Inc. of Perry for the milling and resurfacing of Oregon from 1st Street to 24th Street for a total of $386,550.
Bids were received from five companies.
Public Works Director Dave Grimm says several different options were looked at for the project.
The project was divided into two segments—the first being from 1st Street to the 13-hundred block of Oregon in front of the old John Deere building where the street narrows...( play audio )
Grimm said the project is expected to take ten to fifteen working days.
City Administrator Lynne Ladner discussed funding for the project.
Ladner told commissioners $300,000 is available in the capital budget for streets that can be used for the project.
She recommended seeking bids for temporary bonds to finance the remainder of the project with the bonds to be paid off in 2013. Ladner said the city currently doesn’t have any major projects planned for next year and with the uncertainty of where the legislature is going related to the sales tax it seems to be the most logical way to fully complete the project this year without significant issues to the 2012 budget.
The commission gave the city administrator approval to seek bids for temporary bonds.
