Jan Steinlage of Saylor Insurance nominated Sabetha EMS Hometown Heroes.

In northeast Kansas, where neighbors still look out for one another, a quiet group of heroes stands ready at all hours—often without recognition, but never without purpose.
The Sabetha EMS Association, 26 dedicated volunteers, embodies what it means to serve.
This team includes two paramedics, Lucas Linden and Bobbi Dillion, who also serves as Service Director; five RNs Cheri Key, Sofie Kuenzi, Jennifer Oswald, Brieanna Rose, Anna Knapp, seven AEMTs—Doug Brammer, Josh Burger, Alex Dawdy, Levi Hitchcock, Pam Jackman, Jared Rokey, and Ed Steinlage; eleven EMTs—Jennifer Carr, Calvin Copeland, Elizabeth Lewis, Megan McDonald, Kayla Moore, Laura Nenadov, Mike Rokey, Janelle Smith, April Vogel, Robert Wahwasuck, and Ethan Stewart; and one EMR, Kalynn Miller.
By day, they work as teachers, mechanics, office workers, farmers, and small business owners or employees. They raise families and live like everyone else. But when the call comes in, everything changes.
These volunteers become lifelines.
Whether it’s a late-night emergency, a highway accident, or a nearby call, they respond with urgency, professionalism, and compassion—leaving dinner tables, work, or sleep to provide care.
What sets them apart is their commitment to grow. Each member advances their medical training, improving skills, and patient outcomes.
For residents of Sabetha and surrounding communities, help comes from familiar faces—neighbors who go above and beyond in life’s most vulnerable moments.
They don’t seek recognition. They serve because their community matters. Because hometown heroes aren’t always in headlines—they’re the ones who quietly answer the call, day after day.
And in Sabetha, those heroes wear EMS uniforms.

Week 16 of 52 - April 22nd
In every small town, there are people who quietly dedicate their lives to serving others—no spotlight needed. In Falls City, that person is Gary Jorn.

Gary’s commitment to his community has spanned decades and worn many hats, all rooted in service.
Many residents know him best for his work with the Falls City Volunteer Ambulance Squad, where he has volunteered as an ambulance driver and played a leadership role. In fact, he has even served as president of the squad, helping guide its mission to provide lifesaving care and transport for local patients.
But Gary didn’t stop there. He also worked as a paramedic and spent time in the emergency room, giving him firsthand experience on the front lines of rural healthcare. Whether responding to a call in the middle of the night or assisting patients during critical moments, Gary has always been someone his community could count on.
His dedication carried over into city leadership as well. Gary serves as the City Administrator, Clerk, Treasurer, Street Superintendent and the Parks Supervisor for Falls City, taking on the responsibility of helping manage and improve the community he’s long called home. In addition, he has contributed to other roles within city operations, continuing to support the town’s growth and day-to-day needs.
What makes Gary truly stand out isn’t just the titles he’s held—it’s the consistency of his service. From emergency response to public administration, his work has always been about helping others and strengthening his community.
As Mabel Morton shared in her nomination, Gary embodies what it means to be a hometown hero: someone who steps up, gives back, and makes a lasting difference without ever asking for recognition.
And in Falls City, that difference has been felt by many.
