The Appropriations Committee of the Nebraska Legislature presented its recommendations for mid-biennium budget adjustments to the full Unicameral last week.
District One State Senator Lavon Heidemann, the Chair of the Committee, says five changes the committee proposed whittle a projected budget surplus from $63 million to $17.6 million. He explains three of the proposed changes. (play audio :52)
The committee also added four million dollars to help reduce the developmental disability waiting list, which will serve an additional 212 people. The committee also designated $6.1 million to help fund the design and construction of the veterinary diagnostic center at the University of Nebraska Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Senator Heidemann says the committee recommended funding of some projects with money from the state’s cash reserve. (play audio :36)
Those projects will require local matching funds.
Finally, Heidemann says the Appropriations Committee turned down a few Medicaid cost-saving measures proposed by Governor Dave Heineman. (play audio :24)
Although the current two-year state budget is balanced, Senator Heidemann says the projection for the next two years is not as positive.
