Kansas officials plan to accelerate 32 road projects worth nearly 50-million-dollars to take advantage of low construction prices.
On Friday, legislative leaders were joined by Governor Sam Brownback in saying that the accelerated projects, including those in the local area, will create 470 construction jobs and another 900 indirect jobs.
The projects are mostly repair and reconstruction of roads and bridges, with many having been scheduled to begin next year, while others had no start date. Now, construction is set to begin this fall.
The projects in Brown County are listed as heavy preservation, and include the replacement of eight bridge approaches, in multiple locations, at a cost of 480-thousand-dollars.
Projects in Jefferson County, identified as light preservation, include nearly eight miles of repairs, from the K-192/U.S. 59 junction east to the county line, at a cost of 1.1-million-dollars.
Doniphan County's light preservation projects include over fourteen miles of repairs, on U.S. 36, from the county line east, at a cost of 604-thousand-dollars.
Light preservation work is also planned in Leavenworth County, where 8 ½ miles of repairs will be conducted from the county line east to the U.S. 73/K-192 junction, at a cost of 1.2 million-dollars.
All totaled, 32 projects are planned statewide, and are part of a 10-year, 8-billion-dollar transportation program approved by last year's Kansas Legislature.
