United Bank & Trust "Player to Bank On" (Jan. 3rd)
Bern @ Axtell
Girl’s Varsity: Kristin Haverkamp (Bern) 19 points
The game went down to the wire and was close throughout most of the game. Axtell went into the half with a 17-11 advantage and increased their lead to 12 points at one point in the second half, but the Bern Indians behind, senior guard, Kristin Haverkamp’s 19 points stormed back to get within one with five seconds left. It was Axtell though that was able to hold on to the 29-28 lead for their first victory of the season; winning by that one point score. Haverkamp lead all scorers in the game with 19 and notched the United Bank and Trust "Player to Bank On" in the loss, but it was balanced scoring and defense that help pace the way for the Axtell Eagles first win of the season. Junior center, Bridget Volle lead the Eagles with 10 points, while senior forward, Megan Bernasek chipped in six off the bench, as the Eagles defense forced 20 turnovers by the Bern Indians squad. Axtell improves to 1-6 with the win, while Bern falls to 1-5 with the loss.
Boy’s Varsity: Graham Droge (Bern) 37 points (6--3pter’s)
The Bern Indians jumped on the Axtell Eagles from the horn with their hot shooting and fast break offense, making sure they didn’t look back as the cruised to the 69-39 win. Axtell played well in the game not turning the ball over to much and able to get some good shoots, but some were just not falling in the cylinder for the Eagles. Sophomore center, Payton Heinan lead the Eagles with 16 points while Jordan Heinan and Aaron Schmelzle both chipped in eight points each. For the visiting Bern Indians it was the hot shooting they spurred them along, starting off with junior guard, Graham Droge who netted 37 points, including six three-pointers. Droge wasn’t the only one who scored in double figures for the Indians as junior guard, Taylor Platt scored 12 points and sophomore center, Matthew Haverkamp notched 11 on the scorecard. Bern improved to 5-1 on the season with the win, while Axtell sits at 0-7 and are still in search of their first win of the season.
