(KAIR) -- Next week, around 500 young people will be roaming around Atchison with beanies on their heads.
It’s a tradition that started for Benedictine College freshmen in October 1928.
Dean of Students, Doctor Joe Wurtz, explains how students get these beanies.

The beanie banquet will be from seven until nine Tuesday evening at the college.
Vice President of Student Life, Doctor Linda Henry, talks about the purpose behind the beanie, and how students have fun with it.

Senior Amanda Amthor was one of those.
She walked in May before her final semester this fall in Italy.
Amthor was also the lead student ambassador last year and handed out the beanies to incoming students.
She reflects on how the beanie helped her out as a freshman.

In recent years, students that transfer in also get to take part in the tradition, getting a black beanie.
