Biggs to Play Basketball at Nebraska
Lincoln - University of Nebraska basketball coach Tim Miles announced Thursday afternoon that Deverell Biggs has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to join the Husker basketball program for the 2012-2013 season.
"This is truly an exciting day for Nebraska basketball," Husker Coach Tim Miles said. "Deverell is the first of what we hope to be many recruits from our great state of Nebraska. He is a young man with great talent, a great personality and a person who truly wants to make Nebraska a player on the national level. I love his ability, his skill level and his athleticism, and the fact that he wants to be an ambassador and a lead recruiter for our program. It's a great day to be a Husker, and it is great to have Deverell joining our program."
Biggs is the first in-state player to sign with the Husker basketball program since Jason Dourisseau, Roy Enright and Wes Wilkinson signed NLI's with in the fall of 2001. Biggs is also the first player to sign a National Letter-of-Intent with NU since Tim Miles was named head coach on March 24.
Biggs comes to Nebraska after earning first-team NJCAA All-America honors after guiding Seward County CC to a 31-7 record and a third-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament last month. He averaged 14.6 points, 3.1 assists, 3.3 steals and 3.7 rebounds per game for Coach Bryan Zollinger, ranking fifth nationally in steals. On the season, he had eight games with at least 20 points, including a near triple double with 26 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in one contest, and also eight games with at least five steals.
The Jayhawk West and Region VI Player of the Year, Biggs turned in one of his best performances in the quarterfinals of the national tournament with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four steals against Columbia State. Biggs led Seward County CC in scoring, assists and steals en route to becoming the school's the first player in the school to garner first-team All-America recognition since 2003. He was the Region VI Tournament MVP as he led the Saints to their second National Tournament appearance in five years when he put up 14.0 points and 3.3 assists in Seward's sweep through the postseason tournament
He began his career at West Texas College in 2010-11, averaging 14 points and 3.8 steals per game to earn first-team all-conference recognition for Coach Jason Sautter. He had 31 points against Howard College, one of five 20-point games as a freshman, and seven games with at least five steals.
Biggs originally earned acclaim in leading Omaha Central High School to three Class A state titles during his career, including his senior year when he averaged 21.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in sweeping state player-of-the-year honors from both the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World-Herald for Coach Eric Behrens. A two-time all-state performer, he closed his career with 19 points, four assists and three steals in the 2010 state title game against Norfolk after putting up 35 points in a 53-52 win over Lincoln Southeast in the state semifinals.
Biggs also starred for the Eagles' track program, leading the school to a Class A state title in 2010 by winning the high jump (7'0") and placing sixth in the triple jump. For his efforts, he was named Nebraska High School Athlete of the Year by both of the state's major papers in 2010.
