An anonymous donation to the Falls City Library and Arts Center will help people research their family history.
Library Director Hope Schawang says a $5,000 donation given through local businesswoman Susan Sipple was used to purchase a second microfilm machine for the Library’s Genealogy Room. Schawang says having a second microfilm machine will be a great benefit. (play audio :24)
The Library has many resources and records available to help people researching local history. As technology changes, Schawang says many of the records have been scanned into the computer and are available digitally. (play audio :36)
The 2010 and 2011 editions of the Falls City Journal will also soon be searchable digitally, and the library also has microfilm of many historic Richardson County newspapers. (play audio :36)
Richardson County Census records are available from 1860 through 1910. For those needing help with genealogy research or looking up local history, Schawang says there are several volunteers who regularly provide assistance to visitors. (play audio :45)
The new microfilm machine has been delivered and is now in place in the Library’s Genealogy Room. Schawang says library staff, along with a few local genealogists, received training in how to use the new machine last week.
