(KTNC) - Ten trees will be planted at Kirkman’s Cove Recreation Area in a ceremony Thursday afternoon. The Nemaha Natural Resources District is sponsoring the ceremony, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the north side of the lake near the beach and electrical R-V camping area.
The tree planting initiative, Free Trees for Fall Planting, recently awarded the NRD a grant to plant 10 landscape trees at Kirkman’s Cove. The third grade classes from the HTRS School have been invited to help with the planting.
The initiative aims to celebrate trees and their value, help plant trees in public spaces, promote the healthy establishment and ongoing care of newly-planted trees, diversify the community forest, and provide educational opportunities for people to learn more about tree planting, selection, and care.
Involving the HTRS students in the tree planting, NRD officials say is a way to help the students learn about the proper way to plant and care for new trees. It’s hoped the students will then share that information with other members of their families.
The tree planting initiative is funded through the Nebraska Environmental Trust, and is sponsored by the Nebraska Community Forestry Council and Re-Tree Nebraska.
The public is invited to attend Thursday’s ceremony.
