Norma Maye Pederson, 86, of Muscotah, Kansas passed away at her home near Muscotah, Kansas on August 2, 2025. Norma was born on April 3, 1939, at the Horton Hospital in Horton, Kansas, the daughter of Glen Alexander and Bertha Jane Stirton Wilson. Norma was a graduate of Atchison County Community Schools (ACCHS) in Effingham, Kansas and worked as a dental assistant for Dr. W.R. Hill in Horton following her high school graduation.
She married Halvor C. "Pete" Pederson on April 10, 1959 in Horton, Kansas. Pete and Norma moved to Seattle, Washington, then Portland, Oregon before moving back to the Midwest. Pete was a carpenter and together they renovated each home they lived in, with Norma refinishing woodwork, plastering walls, painting and wallpapering. They lived in North Kansas City, Missouri, moving to farms in Buchanan and Andrew Counties, Missouri, before having their dream home built near Muscotah, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
Norma was a self-taught artist, painting many saw blades and crocks. She crocheted, sewed, quilted, created decoupaged boxes and Christmas ornaments for family members and to sell. She loved her flower and vegetable gardens. Friends and family will miss her handmade birthday, anniversary, and valentine cards arriving in the mail. She raised many Blue Heelers to help with their cattle and pig farming.
Norma attended Muscotah United Church and was very involved in the Muscotah community, leading and participating in their crafting classes and quilt gatherings.
Norma is survived by her daughter Tracy and husband Rick Porter of Smithville, Missouri, son Terry and wife Niki Pederson of Lawrence, Kansas; daughter-in-law Amy Pederson; grandchildren Jonathan (Sarah) Pederson, Ashley (Daniel) Alvear, Nathan (Cassi) Pederson, Miranda (Brian) Bothell, Drew Vest; step-grandchildren Chris, Jackson, and Trey Phan, and Tara Porter (A.J.) Martin; ten great-grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Lila Wilson and Shirley Krebs; numerous nieces and nephews.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Pete, son Tony Pederson, son-in-law Randy Vest and step-grandson Tony Porter. She was the last remaining child in the Glen Wilson family, preceded in death by her brother Bill Wilson and sisters Betty Sawyer, Violet Thorne, Judy Wilson, and Carol Mink Speer.
The family will greet friends on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary in Horton, Kansas from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. and then go in procession for a graveside service at 11:30 A.M. at Brush Creek Cemetery southeast of Horton. Lunch will be served at the Muscotah United Church, Muscotah, Kansas following the graveside service for any family and friends who are able to attend.
Memorials may be made to the Norma Pederson memorial fund to be designated later and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
