Loyola M. Heiman Sudbeck, 91, of Seneca, Kansas, died peacefully with family Sunday night, May 25 at Crestview Manor Nursing Home.
Loyola was born October 6, 1933 to Frank T. and Josephine (Buessing) Heiman. She was raised on a farm north of St. Benedict, KS with two brothers and six sisters. She liked being outside and helped take care of the cows, horses and the garden.
She attended St. Mary's Grade School in St. Benedict and graduated from St. Benedict High School in 1951. She lived in Seneca while working for Dr. Mollahan after graduation.
She married Virgil A. Sudbeck on May 22, 1956 at St. Mary's Church. They lived on their farm north of St. Benedict for 55 years, raising hogs, row crops and six children. Loyola was a dedicated farm wife who helped with chores, kept a large garden, raised chickens, maintained the house and drove the grain truck during harvest.
She was pragmatic and resourceful, teaching herself how to refinish woodwork, reupholster furniture and sew. If something needed done, she figured out how to do it herself. She became a talented seamstress, sewing most of her sons' suits, daughters' clothing and eventually all of their bridesmaid dresses and a wedding dress.
Loyola was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Benedict where she served on the Altar Society, sang in the choir, taught CCD and decorated the church. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, baking, watching her grandchildren and going to their sporting events. She was humble, self-reliant, prayerful and lived simply, never complaining.
In 2011 Loyola and Virgil moved to Baileyville. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2016. After Virgil's passing, she moved to Seneca in 2017, recently residing at Crestview and formerly at Country Place/CREDO Assisted Living.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil in 2016, a son, Max F. Sudbeck in 2003; a great grandson, Carson Ringer in 2020; her parents, Frank T. and Josephine Heiman, siblings Lambert and Frank Heiman Jr., Henrietta Quaney, JoAnn Lierz and an infant brother, Joseph.
She is survived by a son, Dale (Deann) Sudbeck of St. Benedict, four daughters, Lora (Doug) Heiman and Mary Beth (Jim) Haverkamp both of Baileyville, Julie (Eric) Smith of Colwich, KS, Amy (Larry) Kuckelman of Seneca and a daughter-in-law, Rose Sudbeck of Hiawatha; sisters Rosemary McKay and Carol Lohmann of Seneca, Grace (Leroy) Rottinghaus of Leawood, Ellen Westerhaus of Junction City, 20 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be prayed at 2 pm and 7 pm, Wednesday May 28, 2025, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday May 29, 2025 at St. Mary's Church in St. Benedict. Burial will be held in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Church cemetery and restoration funds.
