Douglas W Spellmeier, 70, of rural Powhattan, died unexpectedly May 14, 2025 following emergency surgery at University of Kansas Medical Center.
Doug was born July 30, 1954 to Walter and Leona Tinner Spellmeier who resided and farmed 4 miles west of Powhattan Kansas. Doug is baptized soon after his physical birth and confirmed later at the age of 13 in the Christian faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairview.
Doug grew up on the farm, learning the value of work and learning to be resourceful due to financial and time constraints of what needed to be done to keep a family farm going. Doug attended school at Powhattan and was graduated with the class of 1972. After high school graduation he attended Highland Community College for a short time until he decided he could farm with the skills he had.
Doug is preceded in death by his parents Walt and Leona Tinner Spellmeier, grandparents Otto and Alvina Obrock Tinner, his mother Leona's foster parents Albert and Hulda Biebrich, his grandparents C.W. (Charles) and Emma Thieme Spellmeier, brother-in-law Mark Morgan and cousins Joyce (Tom) Lockwood, Lorena (Dale) Boenker, Martin (Lucy) Bleeke, Walter Tinner.
Doug is survived by his sister Janet (Mark) Morgan of Wathena KS, his brother Dean Spellmeier of Hiawatha KS, and his brother Allan (Marcia) Spellmeier of Fairview KS. nieces Courtney (Tyler) Shaw, Whitney (Darryl) Meng, Bailey (Jake) Matney, Keremy (Michael) Bachelor, Candace (Brady) Sullivan, and nephew Jared Spellmeier. He is also survived by cousins Marlene Poling, Dorothy Reiter, Alvin Bleeke, and Roberta Plattner.
Doug was never married, he enjoyed coming to family gatherings for holidays and birthdays, he also enjoyed the social interaction of morning coffee time with his fellow farmer friends, also meeting up with friends at lunchtime. He also enjoyed going to tool auctions and farm auctions.
Doug exhibited his generosity after leaving his earthly life by being an organ donor, not knowing who or how many others will benefit from it, confident that he will have a renewed and glorified body in the resurrection.
A Celebration of Doug's Eternal Life is planned for 1030 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Fairview with Pastor Brian Holle officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha.
Friends may call at the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hiawatha, after 10 a.m. Tuesday where the family will meet from 6 until 8 Tuesday evening.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Lutheran Hour, Brown County Rescue Squad, or St. Paul's Lutheran Church which may be left in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.
