Annabelle (Eis) Rumbaugh was born on September 26, 1930 in rural Richardson County, Nebraska to Rudolph and Bessie (Klossner) Eis. She passed away in Lincoln, NE on February 10, 2025 at the age of 94. Annabelle attended elementary school at Rosedale Rural District 89, near her family’s farm in Richardson County. She graduated from Humboldt High School in 1947. Annabelle attended Peru State College from 1947 to 1951, while studying Chemistry and Mathematics and earning a Bachelor’s Degree. While attending college, she was an active member of the YWCA, White Angels, Alpha Mu Omega and Sigma Tau Delta sororities, Home Economics club, International Relations Club and the Dorm Council.
After graduating from Peru State College, Annabelle went to work as a Laboratory Technician at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. While working at the University of Nebraska, she met and fell in love with Melvin Dale Rumbaugh, a graduate student in Agronomy. They were married on July 5th, 1953 in St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Lincoln and had four children together, Alan Lee, Rosemary Ann, David James, and Steven Thomas. After marriage, Annabelle became a full-time wife and mother and supported her husband, Melvin in his academic and professional career.
She was an active member of the Methodist Church and volunteered for many organizations that her children participated in. Annabelle, along with her husband, Melvin enjoyed camping very much. They were active members of the Good Sam RV Club in South Dakota and Utah and traveled/camped in their RV throughout the midwestern and western states and Canada. She also was a member of the Richardson County Historical Society, and along with her sister, Mary, published “The Frank Eis SR Family” in 1982, a compilation of the history of the Eis family in Nebraska.
Annabelle was preceded in death by her brother David J. Eis (1954), her son, David James (1973), her sisters, Betty Marfice (2010), and Mary Hessler (2011), her parents (Rudolf and Bessie Eis) and her husband Melvin Rumbaugh (2023).
She is survived by her sister, Ruth Ellen Flentje of San Marcos, TX, her children, Alan Lee of Plymouth, NE, Rosemary Ann of Ramah, NM and Steven Thomas I. of Champaign, IL, 3 grandchildren, Cody Alan Rumbaugh, Steven Thomas Rumbaugh II., and Kaylie Ann Carlson, one step-granddaughter, Beth Yoble, and four step-great grandchildren, Tucker, Ryker, Kennedi, and Tilley Townsley.
A Funeral Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the Wherry Mortuary, 207 N. Nemaha Street, Humboldt, Nebraska. Burial will be in the Bohemian National Cemetery, four miles southwest of Humboldt, Nebraska. A reception will follow at Kellys Café on the square in Humboldt after the burial.
