George Swaney, of Holton, passed away February 4th, 2025 at the age of 73.
George was a pillar in his community of Holton, Kansas. He was a long-time farmer and crop adjuster. His days began before dawn and often did not end until the stars filled the night sky. He believed in the value of honest work and instilled this belief in his children, teaching them the importance of responsibility, respect, and community.
In addition to his agricultural legacy, George leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by his wife Jean Swaney, his son Peter Swaney, and his wife Carrie Swaney, his daughter Kristen Swaney, and her husband Robin Simpson, his grandchildren Olivia and Peter Mac Swaney, and numerous extended family members, friends, and neighbors who were fortunate to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Jerry Swaney, and his two brothers Tom and Jack.
George is best known for his big smile, constant positivity, and willingness to help others; be it family, neighbor, or anyone in need. He and his wife, Jean, had been married for 51 years which had taken them through many great memories and some tough times. Some of their best times included traveling, watching football, and cooking together. George had a special relationship with his children. He would often talk with Peter about everything from farming, home repair, to weather. George had all the answers, which Peter will truly miss as when life was great, or hard, or just needed an answer - George was the first he called. His daughter, Kristen, was always by his side from the word game challenge they sent each other every morning, to being one of the last voices he heard before bed. He moved her across the country, and back. Indeed, he would move mountains for his little girl.
George and his grandson Peter Mac were especially close. From early mornings with his famous trashcan eggs, to snoring in tandem in the living room, they were thick as thieves. A great love between George, Peter, and Peter Mac was football. George never missed a high school game for Peter Mac and watched him commit to playing football in college. He will be greatly missed in the stands this upcoming season. Olivia, his granddaughter, would always laugh at his antics and stories. He was proud of her academic accomplishments and the future she is making herself.
Visitation will be held from 11-1 pm on Friday, February 21st, at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
