Dennis Robert Thummel, 85, of Topeka, KS formerly of Atchison, KS and Cameon, MO, passed away on Monday, Jan. 27th, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka, KS.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, Jan. 31st, 2025, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Fr. Meinrad Miller, OSB officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Disabled American Veterans Association and may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer- Stanton Funeral Home. Dennis was born on Jan. 18, 1940, in Muskogee, OK the son of Joseph T. and Margaret P. (Wentz) Thummel. He graduated from the Ingall’s Senior High School, Atchison in May 1958. He earned an associate degree in accounting from Highland Community Junior College in May 1977. Dennis was a United States Navy veteran, and the US Army reserves. He worked as the Senior Storekeeper at Atchison Casting 1978-2002 and then as the Transportation Officer for St. Francis Academy from 2003-2005.
He was a former member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Atchison, the American Legion Post # 6, Atchison, the Cameron Veterans Memorial Golf Club, Cameron, MO. He enjoyed reading, fishing, listening to music, the outdoors and playing golf.
Dennis was married to Joan Pietrzak. They were later divorced, He was married to Alice L. Strawhacker, they were also later divorced. Dennis was married to Mary L. Word; she preceded him in death. He was married to Mary Johanna Betts on Dec. 8, 2003, she preceded him in death on Oct. 29, 2023. Survivors include three sons Robert L. and Julie Boatright, Leavenworth, KS, George E. Thummel, Atchison, KS, and August Theodore “Teddy” Thummel, Topeka, KS, a sister Patricia L. Heim, Atchison, KS, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three daughters Kimberly N. Dixon, Debra M. Calhoon, Alice R. Roets, a son Dennis Thummel, a brother John J. Thummel and a granddaughter Jessica Boatright.
