Samuel Dale Harvey, Sr., 85, of Oskaloosa, passed away at home with his family at his side on Monday, September 2, 2024.
Sam was born January 14, 1939 at Ronceverte, W.VA., the son of Buster Brown and Ethel Byrd Rodgers Harvey. He was a 1956 graduate of Ronceverte High School and attended Marshall University in Huntington, W.VA. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving from February 26, 1957 to February 7, 1961.
After returning from the Navy, he was working as a carpenter and came to Kansas with a Navy buddy and was building the Lindsay's House in Nortonville, where he met his wife, Bonnie. He soon transferred to work at the Nortonville Lumber Yard. He married Bonnie Rose Lindsay on June 28, 1964 at the Nortonville United Methodist Church. He started Harvey and Sons Construction Company at Meriden and operated it for 25 years. After selling the Construction Company, “Sam” and Bonnie owned and operated Harvey's Hardware 23 years in Oskaloosa, retiring in 2010. Living in Meriden 11 years and Oskaloosa, 49 years, the Harvey's have always had a cow/calf operation.
Sam was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in both Meriden and Oskaloosa, serving as a youth group leader, Sunday School Teacher and as a member of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of Oskaloosa U.S.D.#341 Board of Education for eight years and the Jefferson County Educational CO-OP Board for four years.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie R. Harvey, one daughter, Debbie (Bill) Martin, Valley Falls, two sons, Sam (Carrie) Harvey , Jr, and Lloyd “Tom” Harvey, both of Oskaloosa, one sister, Bonnie Alderman, Reedsville, VA, seven grandchildren, April Kruse, Tonganoxie, Nicole (Tyler) Pracht, Shawnee, Lindsay Martin, Valley Falls, Benjamin (Kayla) Harvey, Spring Hill, Zachariah Harvey, Oskaloosa, Paige Harvey and Derrick Harvey, both of Oskaloosa, one great-grandson, Tucker Pracht, Shawnee. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bessie Nole.
Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 14, 2024 at Oskaloosa United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour before Service, 10:00 to 11:00 AM at the Church. Cremation Care is planned. Private family Inurnment will be at Nortonville Cemetery. Memorials suggested to Oskaloosa United Methodist Church or to Jefferson County Friends of Hospice.
