Jim was born on December 5, 1947 to Melvin and Hilda (Kamen) Buhman in Pawnee City, Nebraska. Jim spent his childhood living on the family farm in Steinauer, Nebraska bailing hay, mowing, milking cows and working in the fields. He graduated from Steinauer High School in 1965.
Jim enlisted in the Army at the age of eighteen and spent two years stationed in Germany in postal operations. Jim often proudly reminisced about his time in Germany. He drove a VW Bug around the countryside experiencing German culture and his ancestry.

Jim spent forty eight years working for Firestone. He started out mounting tires at the store in Lincoln and worked his way up to District Sales Manager in the Agricultural Division covering the heartland of the U.S. Jim retired June 30, 2013.
Jim always made friends everywhere he went. He knew no stranger. He loved sports, especially Nebraska football, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and any sport his grandkids were playing. He was his kids and grandkids biggest fan, rarely missing a game. Nothing made Jim more proud than his grandkids: Tanner, Landon, Will, Brooke and Luke. Since retirement, he loved tinkering in his woodshed, often making new shelves, tables and anything Marilyn or his kids and grandkids might like. He loved his cabin in Iowa on the bank of the Missouri River where he could relax and sit by the fire.
