Doris Jean Farwell, 89, of DuBois, Nebraska passed away on August 15, 2024 at her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was born November 1, 1934 to Gertrude Freda (Bucher) and Henry Hess, Jr. at rural Pawnee City, NE. She grew up on a farm with 8 sisters and 2 brothers southeast of Pawnee City. Doris attended grade school in Pawnee County at Prairie Star #7 through 8th grade. She graduated from Pawnee City High School in 1952 as valedictorian of her class.
After graduation, Doris continued to help on the family farm while her fiancé, Richard Pelton Farwell, was stationed in Korea with the U.S. Army. They were married on October 24, 1954 at Friedens United Church of Christ, after his return. They established their home on the Farwell home place northeast of DuBois. Four children were born to this union; Jeanne Marie, Gary Lynn, Randall Scott, and Russell Dale. In March of 1965, Dick and Doris purchased and moved to a farm southeast of DuBois where they remained until their health declined.
Doris was secretary of the DuBois School Board a few years until it closed in 1975 and then continued with the Pawnee City School Board for 9 years. She was involved with the F.U.N. Club for many years playing Summerset cards and also played Canasta with family and friends. Doris enjoyed quilting with her sisters and sisters-in-law. Her hobbies included hand embroidery and sewing clothes. She did gardening and canning until her kids had their own gardens. Doris loved gospel and country music, baking cookies and Husker sports. In later years, she enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and making computerized greeting cards. She was a lifetime member of the Friedens United Church of Christ and served on the church council and many other committees.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard in 2020, and siblings; Larry Hess, Jane Bridgemon, and Loree Farwell, and grandson Brian Stephen Farwell.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne (Perry) Kitchens of Bennington; sons, Gary (Marianne) of DuBois, Randy (Debra) of Lincoln, and Russell (Cody) of DuBois, 13 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. Doris is also survived by her siblings; Ardyth Farwell, Shirley Fairfield, Carolyn Droge, Donna Lantz, Judith (Don) Albers, Lyle (June) Hess, Diane Droge, and sister-in-law, Kay Farwell. Other survivors include many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral Services 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at Friedens U.C.C. Church, rural Bern, Kansas. Reverend Ken Tubbesing officiating. Visitation on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m., at Wherry Mortuary, 919 G Street, Pawnee City, Nebraska. Interment at Friedens U.C.C.
