Charlie M. “Toots” Smith, 96, of Effingham, KS, passed away Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the Medicalodge of Atchison, KS.

The funeral service will 2:00 PM, Monday, March 4, 2024, at the Becker Chapel in Effingham, KS, with Rev. Jeff Cochran officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at the Chapel. Memorials are suggested to Effingham Union Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Charlie was born November 18, 1927, the son of Charlie L. and Etta M. (Fields) Smith. He was a Master Machinist for the Meriden Machine Shop. Charlie was a member of Effingham Union Church, Promise Keepers and enjoyed woodwork and metal craft, fishing and traveling. Charlie especially enjoyed his grandchildren and church family.

Charlie married Verna M. Kidd on September 18, 1964, in San Antonio, TX, she preceded him on April 27, 2019. Survivors include a son, Martin Smith, Effingham, KS, three daughters, Diana M. Stone, Topeka, KS, Debra K. Cell, Meriden, KS, Delores A. (Charles) Lively, Alpine, AL, fifteen grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

He was also preceded by his parents, two sons, Timothy J. and William A. Smith, two brothers James and Larry Smith, a sister, Reva Snell and one grandchild Lynn Ann Smith.
