David Kent Reed, 76, of Seneca, KS, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 20, 2023. He was born July 17, 1947, in Emporia, KS, the son of William “Bill” G. and Dorothy L. (Christy) Reed.
David graduated from Wetmore High School in 1965. After high school, David became a Colorado Rocky Mountain National Park Backwoods Ranger during the summer months for over 8 years. He received his Bachelor- Degree from Emporia State University, and then from Colorado State University his Master- Degree.
Over an impressive career he would work in many aspects. David was a Biology Teacher at Washburn High School. He would serve as High School Counselor at Hanover and Greenleaf High Schools. David would serve the students at Allen County Community College. He also worked with Three Rivers Inc in Wamego for three years helping to promote self-reliance of individuals with disabilities through education, advocacy, training and support. Aside from work, he was active in Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club. He was a past member of the Wetmore United Methodist Church, and a current member of the Manhattan United Methodist Church.
David was an advocate of people with disabilities in the Wildlife and State Parks sites for both lakes and parks as well as the Kansas Universities. He also looked for improving to accommodate people with disabilities through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. David helped pass through legislation, the development of technology for people with disabilities the ability to enjoy hunting with a power crossbow.
Survivors include 2 sisters, Susan Henry (Gary) of Seneca, KS, and Sandy Mitchell (Kenny) of Dover, KS; 4 nieces; 1 nephew; 5 great nieces and 5 great nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents, William and Dorothy Reed.
Memorial Service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends one hour prior to service time.
