Hubert W. Lackey, 81, of Seneca, Kansas died on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas.  

He was born a twin on February 14, 1934, to William and Laurina Duethman Lackey. He attended Humphrey Country School and St. Peter and Paul School. He worked on the family farm as a young man.  

Hubert served his country from 1953-1960 as a Boiler Operator II in the United States Navy.  Hubert worked as a carpenter in Olathe, Topeka and Gardner, Kansas. On June 1, 1974 he married Marlene Spielman in Mission, Kansas. The couple returned to Nemaha County in 1977 to help care for their aging parents.  Hubert was employed with Suther Lumber helping in the construction of homes, and then with Nemaha County building bridges and maintaining roads. 

After Marlene and Hubert retired, they relished traveling.  They visited almost every state via their camper.  They explored the National Parks and many other beautiful places throughout the USA where they experienced all they could from each destination.  They also enjoyed being “snow birds” for nine years, traveling to Texas to avoid the Kansas winters and making many friends. 

Hubert was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Society and the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an outdoor person; hunting, fishing, taking care of the pasture and his garden.  He loved playing cards and various games.  Hubert had the ability to visit, he never met a stranger. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Remiga Lierz and Alice Kongs.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marlene; two daughters, Crystal Lackey of Topeka, Kansas and Erica West of Montreal, Missouri; his twin, Eugene (Norene) Lackey of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother, Gerald Lackey of Seneca; sister, Monica Stallbaumer of Overland Park, Kansas; six grandchildren, Nathan Ingram, Nick Ingram, Noah Lackey, Tawny Meeks, Clay Unruh and Cheyanna Lackey; and two great-grandchildren. 

Rosaries will be prayed on Sunday, August 16th at 2 &7 PM at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, August 17, 2015 at 2 PM at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. A flag line will be provided by the American Legion Riders Post #21.

A private burial will be in the church cemetery at a later date; with full military honors provided by the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Earl W. Taylor Post #21.
