Ethel Shaw, 86, of Highland, Kansas, passed into glory on July 25, 2015, at Mosaic Hospital, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Ethel was born March 26, 1929, at Wheeler Grove, Iowa, one of four children born to Archer and Lena Smith Edie. The family moved to Kansas when Ethel was at a young age and settled at White Cloud where she attended country school near there. She married John Alfrey in Fanning, Kansas, September 25, 1943. To this union, six children were born. She operated restaurants in Highland for many years. Ethel and John made their home in the White Cloud-Highland, Kansas area. John Alfrey preceded her in death October 25, 1968.

Ethel married Robert (Bob) Shaw of Fairfax, Missouri, October 25, 1979. They made their home in Highland. He died January 11, 2006.

Ethel is survived by her children: Shirley (Jerry) Walker of Horton, KS, John (Linda) Alfrey of Highland, Linda (Gene) Bottom of Meriden, KS, Barbara Burroughs of Louisville, KY, Debra (Bill) Leach of Highland, Morton David Alfrey of St. Joseph; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings Kenneth Edie of White Cloud, Joseph (Barb ) Edie of Highland, with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Violet Ptomey; daughter in law Janet Alfrey, son in law Richard “Doc” Burroughs.

Services are planned for 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 29, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland, with Pastor Brian Hardee, of Rock Creek Bible Church of Meriden, officiating. Sam Blythe will assist. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesday. The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Wednesday.
