Ted Montgomery

Theodore R. “Ted” Montgomery, 93, Valley Falls, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at Midland Care Linnwood Park Assisted Living at Valley Falls.
He was born on April 17, 1921, at Larkinburg, the son of Earl H. and Edna Winifred Hunn Montgomery. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1938, and attended Kansas State Agricultural College.
Ted served in the 8th Army Air Corps in WW II at Lavenham Airbase in England. He was a radio operator and machine gunner on a B-17 bomber and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a charter member of Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served as Quartermaster, Officer of the Day, Service Officer, and was in charge of hospital equipment.
Ted was a Rural Mail Carrier at Valley Falls for 37 years. He had operated an anhydrous applicator service and worked for Corpstein International Harvester and Weisharr Implement, both in Valley Falls. He was Valley Falls Fire Chief for 12 years and volunteered with the Valley Falls Rescue Squad. Ted was a member of the Valley Falls United Methodist Church.
He married Jessie Mae Koons Oct. 17, 1948, at Topeka. She died March 5, 2014. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Russell Montgomery, and a grandson, Chris Reyner.
Survivors include his son, Roger (Mayjo) Montgomery, and his daughter, Roxana Montgomery, all of Topeka; two sisters, Dorothy Schneider, Ft. Worth, TX, and Doris Greene, Topeka.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at the Valley Falls United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Valley Falls Cemetery with military honors conducted by Grahem-Herbers Post 3084, V.F.W. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, at Mercer Funeral Home in Valley Falls.
