Lawrence Lee (Smiley) Blanton Jr., 70, of rural Highland passed peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and three daughters, Saturday, November 8, 2014.

He was born December 12, 1943 at his childhood home south of Sparks, the oldest of four sons born to Lawrence Sr. and Evelyne (Campbell) Blanton. He attended country schools, graduated from Highland High School in 1961 and Highland Community College in 1963. In his early years, he farmed with his dad and brothers, later becoming a heavy equipment mechanic. He loved life and was involved in various organizations and activities. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and enjoyed hunting. Smiley was a member of Local 101, Charter Member of the Highland Lions club, Trustee for the Iowa Township and a REA board member.

He married his “sweet thing” Mary Lou Wykert on January 23, 1965. Together they had three daughters, Kimberly & Stephen Boos, Karla & Larry Diveley, and Karen & Greg Price. Spending time with his grandchildren, Nikki & Mackenzie Boos; Spencer & Lacie Diveley; and Piper Price, brought him lots of enjoyment. Other survivors include his brothers Gary Blanton, John Blanton and sister-in-law Charlott Hall.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William Maxwell Blanton, and his beloved grandson, Cole Lawrence Diveley. Grandpa Smiley will be buried with Cole Lawrence as per his grandson’s wishes.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Community of Christ Church in Fanning Kansas.
