(KLZA)-- Residents of Brownville are to boil all water used for drinking for at least one minute before drinking the water, using it to make ice, brushing your teeth, washing dishes or preparing food until further notice, due to a violation of the drinking water microbiological standards.
E. coli bacteria has been discovered in the distribution system. This indicates the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Human pathogens in these waters can cause short- term effect such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a special health risk for infants, young children, some of the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems.
Bacterial contamination can occur when increased run-off enters the drinking water source. This could include following heavy rains and can also happen due to a break in the distribution system pipes.
The Village of Brownville public water supply system in continuing to test and is working with the Drinking Water Program to identify the source of the problem and return the water supply system to compliance.
