New Museum to Open in Brownville
(KTNC)--An exciting and important project has been under development in the heart of historic Brownville and is now ready to receive visitors. This project is the establishment of the Flatwater Folk Art Museum which now provides a unique and valued cultural offering for Nebraska and compliments the existing collections and programs in the region. This new museum, the Flatwater Folk Art Museum, is housed in the Howe Church that was relocated to Main Street at 6th Street in the frontier river-town of Brownville, Nebraska.
This 1884 Methodist Episcopal Church, an archetypical example of American Prairie Gothic, white-painted architectural wooden structure, is an ideal facility for an American folk art collection. The building was acquired by the Flatwater Art Foundation and has been renovated and re-designed internally for professional museum exhibit display and functions, and utilizes the intrinsic physical qualities of scale and space of the original church sanctuary. It seems appropriate that the Flatwater Folk Art Museum will join the Brownville Village Theatre and the Brownville Concert Hall, in adapted church structures that have been converted to serve as cultural amenities and tourist attractions for historic Brownville.
The Flatwater Folk Art Museum collection, exhibitions and folk-life programs illuminate and document valued aspects of American culture through the aesthetics of daily life. The museum collection displays feature a broad spectrum of intriguing artifacts ranging from historic traditional folk art and crafts, naive expressions to contemporary “outsider” art. This collection displays are thematically installed in themes such as Native American, Early American, Southwest, Fishing Lures, Duck Decoys, Game Boards, Outsider Art and also includes toys, pottery, needle art, whirligigs, weather vanes and many other art objects made by “folks.”
The public is invited to the inaugural opening of the Flatwater Folk Art Museum located at 609 Main Street in Brownville, Nebraska on Sunday 12 October 2014 from 1:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Admission is free.
