Nebraska Legislature Begins Medicaid Expansion Debate
(KTNC) - Debate has begun on whether Nebraska should expand Medicaid under provisions of the federal health care law.
Senator Kathy Campbell opened the debate by telling colleagues their vote on Medicaid expansion sends a message...and not just about costs. (play audio :17)
Senator Tanya Cook dismissed suggestions by opponents that charities can cover the uninsured, and that prevention could decrease health care needs. (play audio :21)
Senator Dan Watermeier of Syracuse, though, contends that the numbers don’t add up – that with 240-thousand Nebraskans now on Medicaid, expansion could add 54-thousand Nebraskans to the rolls, plus another 50-thousand mandated to be added by the new federal health care law. Watermeier says, combined, that would add more than 100-thousand Nebraskans to Medicaid. (play audio :15)
Supporters, though, point out the federal government has promised to pay the full cost of expansion for three years...and 90-percent thereafter. When a vote might come is unknown.
