Bike Safety Program at Falls City Library
05/09/2014

(KTNC) -  As summer approaches, kids will soon be out of school…and many will be out riding their bicycles to and from parks, pools, baseball and softball diamonds, and other places.
With more kids riding bicycles on the streets, safety becomes more of a concern. The Falls City Police Department presented bicycle safety tips to kids during a program at the Falls City Library and Arts Center Thursday afternoon.
Assistant Police Chief Jamie Baker says kids – and adults – should keep safety in mind before heading out on a bicycle. He says to go with the flow of traffic and wear brightly-colored clothing and a helmet, as drivers don't always notice bicycles. If riding at night, bikes should be equipped with headlights and taillights.
Baker says bike riders need to remember that traffic laws that apply to other vehicles also apply to bicycles - including stop signs, yield signs, and even speed limit signs. Bicyclists also are required to allow pedestrians the right-of-way.
In addition, Baker says drivers also need to be aware that there will be more kids riding bicycles on the streets during the summer months.
In addition to safety, Baker also says the Falls City Police Department will license your bicycle. You can bring your bicycle to the Police Department, and they will log the bike's serial number and give you a sticker to put on your bike. The license allows authorities to more easily return a bike should it be stolen.
The bike licenses are free and they’re good for as long as you own the bicycle.
