(KTNC) -- The campaign to raise the $2.3 million needed to build a new Activity Center at Falls City Sacred Heart School is progressing.
Since the campaign began in December, Monsignor Robert Roh says donors have pledged just over $1.7 million dollars. They are in the midst of a "friends" and alumni donation campaign, and have also received support from local businesses.
The activity center would be attached to the school and would include a full-size gym, locker rooms, and weight room. Monsignor Roh says that would help relieve an ongoing space issue that has Sacred Heart basketball teams staggering their practice schedules. The facility would also include a new lunchroom. The lunchroom is currently located in the Parish House basement, which requires children to go outside and cross 18th Street to eat lunch.
Completion of the new activity center will not mean the demise of Sacred Heart’s Tiehen Gym, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year. Once hailed as the finest gym in the Little Ten Conference, Father Roh says Tiehen Gym needs to be renovated – and they have plans to do just that. He says the building is structurally sound, but the interior needs to be almost completely renovated.
Tiehen Gym has served many purposes for Sacred Heart and the Catholic community of Falls City and surrounding parishes over the years. It's been used as a parish church, basketball and volleyball court for Sacred Heart, a bingo parlor, and a kitchen and lunchroom.
Monsignor Roh says Sacred Heart also plans to continue playing basketball and many volleyball games at Prichard Auditorium after the new Activity Center is completed. The fundraising committee has set a date of April 1st to complete its campaign.
